John Griffin
The community was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of John Griffin, an esteemed farmer of this place, on Monday morning, April 23, after a week's illness. The deceased was 53 years of age, having been born in Coral township, Illinois, on December 2, 1864. He was married on March 18, 1886, to Miss Ida Simons of Marengo township, Illinois. To this union were born nine children, three having preceded their father to their heavenly home, the one, Mrs. Mabel Thomas, only a few weeks ago. In March, 1913, he with his family moved to their newly purchased home, the Palmer farm, and has become a respected citizen and business man of this place. His was a cheerful disposition, always throwing out a ray of sympathy and sheer. He is survived by the widow, two sons, Henry and Leslie, four daughters, Mrs. Sada DeLand, Winifred and Dorothy Griffen (Griffin) and Mrs. Grace Shavers (Schauer) of Union, Ill.; five grandchildren and an only brother, Henry Griffen (Griffin), sr. of Woodstock, Ill. The funeral was held at the house on Wednesday afternoon and was attended by a large company of friends. Rev. H. H. Coates officiated and E. A. Harrington and Mrs. Lola Fraer sang. Those from out of town who attended were Henry Griffen (Griffin), sr., of Woodstock, Ill; Mrs. Charles Baumgartner of Oshkosh, Wis; Mrs. Sada Simons, Alfred Simons and Carmi Simons of Marengo, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas of Brooklyn; and Mr. and Mr. Thomas and Howard Thomas and children of Columbia.
