Gale W. Clem, 94, of Ames, died Saturday, June 10, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Lewis presiding. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Gale W. Clem was born April 5, 1912, in Ames, the son of Richard Rueben and Hattie Adele (Woolsey) Clem. He graduated from Ames High School. He was the owner of Pammel Grocery Store at Iowa State University; prior to that, he worked at Corwin Cleaners in Des Moines for 11 years. He retired in 1977.
He married Valora Jean Akin Jan. 30, 1940, in Bethany, Mo. His grandparents came to Iowa in 1852 in a covered wagon from Indiana. His family was very important to him. He celebrated his 94th birthday with family and friends. A family tradition he started 20 years ago was having Sunday brunch together. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Golden K Kiwanis of Ames and Red Friars. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, dancing, music and playing the banjo. He had a great sense of humor.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Bee Rouze; five children, Richard (GeAnna) Clem of Ames, Deanna Clem of Ames, Gary (Sue) Clem of Nevada, Marilyn Clem of Ames and Margo (Gary) Eckley of Ames; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers, Clyde and Glen.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Adams Funeral Home with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
