American playwriter, screen writer, novelist, and short stories. Was born in Brooklyn, New York with the name Irwin Gilbert Shamforoff. When he went to college he had his name changed to Irwin Shaw. His most famous book and screen play (tv), was "Rich Man, Poor Man", written in 1970. In 1976 it was a miniseries on tv. Later he would write "Beggarman, Thief" a novel and a miniseries, both starring Nick Nolte, Peter Straus, and a rich line up of stars and locations. In 1949 he wrote a book "Young Lions" based on his military service in World War II. He was never happy with how Hollywood portrayed the story. Marlon Brando, Montgomery Cliff, Dean Martin and Hope Lange starred in the movie. "Evening In Byzantium " in 1978. "Two Weeks In Another Town " 1960. He was awarded many awards for his writing. He fought blacklisting in the 50's for others. It got him blacklisted. His response; he left for Europe. He continued to write.
He was married to Marian Edwards an actress from 1939-1967. They divorced, but in 1982 remarried. Later he would return, but died in Davos Switzerland, age 71, of prostate cancer.
