Thomas James Blackshear was the twelfth child and seventh son of Charlie Mitchell Blackshear and Martha Orlando Jackson Blackshear. He grew up in Wellington, Collingsworth County, Texas and received his early education at the Indian Creek School on the East Fork River. Thomas James was called "T.J." and was over 6 feet tall. T.J. was married to Helen Louise McGill on September 15, 1939 in Wellington, Collingsworth County, Texas.
Pfc. T.J. Blackshear was home on leave from Sturgis Army Air Field, Sturgis, Kentucky, to be with his wife and son, Donald Lee, born three days later.
He had been in the Air Force for a year after receiving his basic training at Sheppard Field and later was sent to Kentucky for duty. Prior to his enlistment, he was employed by the Collingsworth Motor Company. Pfc Blackshear had arrived in Wellington on Tuesday to be with his wife and new son and just a few minutes after leaving the St. Joseph's Hospital, his car collided with another and overturned at the northeast corner of the town section killing him instantly. Funeral services for Pfc. Blackshear were held Sunday afternoon, November 4, 1941, at the First Baptist Church in Wellington, Texas. Rev. Henry H. Kinkade, pastor, was in charge of the rites.
The American Legion conducted grave side rites at the Wellington Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Kelso Funeral Home.
Helen Louise McGill Blackshear, married again after her husband's death. Wellington court records show Vol. 7, pg. 272, she married, Royce A. Walters. Also the children's names were changed from Blackshear to Walters.
