Rev. Charlie Chambers, age 86, of Hot Springs, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2019.
He was born on July 18, 1932, in Pioneer, Tennessee, the son of Maynard Deroy Chambers and Gracie Mae Green Chambers. On October 21, 1952, he was married to the love of his life, Thelma McLain. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant children, Charles Chambers and Carolyn Chambers; his daughter, Darlene Moore; four brothers, Willard Chambers, David Chambers, Ralph Chambers and R.D. Chambers; his sister, Martha Jane Padgett; and his sister-in-law, Lottie McLain.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and served as Pastor for Calvary Assembly of God, and Souls Harbor, both of which he was instrumental in organizing. He also served as Pastor for many other area churches over the period of many years before retiring from full-time pastoring. He was truly a man of faith, who dedicated his entire life to serving his Lord.
Rev. Charlie had an integral part in establishing the AEGA World Wide Ministries in Louisiana and, along with his wife, Thelma, assisted with setting up the first Head Start in Arkansas. He was a long-time member on the board of St. Joseph’s Hospital, now CHI St. Vincent’s-Hot Springs and also a member of the Lions Club. He was a devoted family man, who dearly loved and cherished each and every member of his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Thelma Chambers of Hot Springs; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Debbie Chambers of Benton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and James Hill of Bonnerdale, Linda and Brett McCool of Hot Springs and Joy and Dale Speers of Fountain Lake; thirty-two grandchildren; forty-six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Fred Clevenger of Indiana and Faye and Gene Bayles of Tennessee; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members; and a host of wonderful and loving friends.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, April 12, 2019, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hot Springs, with Rev. Virgil Blaylock, Rev. Robert Howell and Rev. Homer LaRue officiating.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Coker Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Army Honors Team.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jeremy Chambers, Forest Hill, Daniel Hill, Jeffery Goines, Andy Goines, Roger Moore, Brent Hoffman and Blake Breshears.
Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Harbuck, his “special angels” from Arkansas Hospice Home Base, Sandra, Barbara and Helen, and the nurses and staff of Arkansas Hospice Inpatient, 5th Floor, CHI St. Vincent, Hot Springs.
