Raymond "R. D." Chambers, 66, of the Rockhouse community, died December 1, 1996, at the Scott County Hospital following a lingering illness. Born in Scott County, January 28, 1930, he was the son of the late Maynard and Grace Mae Green Chambers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded also in death by one infant grandson, James Dean Chambers; one brother, Willard Chambers and father-in-law, Rev. Robert "Bob" Williams. He was a school bus driver for 27 years, and a member and songleader for the Five Black Gum Baptist Church. He sang with the Mt. Pleasant Gospel Singers for several years, and was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Tennessee Defense Force. He is survived by his wife, Nila Mae Williams Chambers; one son, Jimmy Ray Chambers and wife, Janna Fay; four daughters: Judy Mason and husband, Donald, and Velva Sexton, all of the Rockhouse community; Janet Watson and husband, Jerry of Oneida, Tenn.; and Shelby Lowe of Powell, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren; one great grandchild; three sisters: Martha Jane Steel and husband, Hurstle of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Shirley Jeffers and husband, Jim of Cicero, Ind.; and Faye Bayles and husband, Gene of Ingalls, Ind.; three brothers: David and wife, Gladys of Cincinnati, Ohio; Ralph and wife, Bertie of Jamestown; and Rev. Charlie Chambers and wife, Thelma of Hot Springs, Ark.; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 5, 1996, 11 a.m., at the Five Black Gum Baptist Church with Revs. Dudley Harness, Mac Lay and Ben Lay officiating. The Church Choir will sing. Interment will follow in the Lay-Chambers Cemetery. West-Murley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
