George graduated from Albion High School in 1944 and was drafted into the army. [Oct 6 1944] After basic training, he was sent to Europe in WWII as an infantry replacement in the 70th Infantry Division. When the war in Europe ended, he was assigned to Gen. Eisenhower's Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, where he was executive secretary to the headquarters commandant. [Left service Aug 1, 1946 Fort Dix, New Jersey]
After the war, he spent his freshman year at Gannon University in Erie, Pa. and then entered the University of Pennsylvania at the Wharton School of Finance, Philadelphia, Pa. He joined the ROTC and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, retiring 20 years later as a Captain.
After working in Cleveland at Higbee's and then Society for Savings, he obtained his teaching credential at Edinboro University and began teaching high school in Saegertown, Pa. and later completed 30 years teaching in Tustin Unified School District, Tustin, Calif.
He lived in Costa Mesa, Calif. with his partner where they owned and operated several apartment rentals. On retiring, they moved to San Diego Country Estates in Ramona, Calif. where they became active in the Santa Ysabel Indian Mission at Santa Ysabel, Calif., restoring the stained glass windows and the Stations of the Cross. After Richard's death in 2004, George moved to Cathedral City, Calif., near Palm Springs, where he entertained many relatives and friends for several years.
George was an ardent gardener and avid reader. His other hobbies were motorcycling on his Harley, and traveling the world on several cruises, the last a world cruise of four months in 2009.
The Bonham Bros. & Stewart Mortuary in Ramon, Calif. handled funeral arrangements as well as the Mattera Funeral Home in Albion, Pa. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Albion with Fr. Philip Oriole officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Crossingville.
