Elizabeth White was the daughter of James Taylor White and Elizabeth Powe, both Virginians by birth. She was 17-years-old when she married 28-year-old Joseph Smart in 1771. The couple migrated to the Mooresboro area of western North Carolina and then later moved a little farther west to Ellenboro. She and Joseph farmed the land and raised nine children. She is buried in the Smart~Hamrick Family Cemetery/Graveyard and her field stone sits next to her husbands (Joseph) in the northeast section of the cemetery.
