Elizabeth "Betsy" (Smart) Brooks was the daughter of Joseph Smart and Elizabeth White, the original pioneers to the Ellenboro area of Rutherford County, North Carolina. She was 19 when she married David Mack Brooks in Rutherford County on Feb.9, 1808. Betsy and David had two children -- first a girl named Rachel that was born on Nov. 20, 1808, and then a son named Jacob, born in late 1810 or early 1811. Betsy was barely 21 when her second child was born, and sadly, this pregnancy did not end well. Betsy did not survive this child's birth. She was one of the first persons to be buried in what was then known as the Old Smart Family Graveyard. Her headstone/field stone sits next to her parents field stones in the northeast corner of the graveyard.
