Joseph D. Smart, Sr.: Born abt. 1736.
Per Martha Smart: "The story has been passed down by family members that Joseph Smart came to Rutherford County, North Carolina about 1770. He left Pennsylvania, came through Virginia, and married Elizabeth White. They first settled in Mooresboro (now Cleveland County) and later moved to Ellenboro (Webb's Creek) which is 1/2 mile SE of Corinth Baptist Church. He was a carpenter/cooper by trade. His will was dated June 24, 1818 and filed June 1819. He is buried in Joseph Smart Cemetery, now called Hamrick Family Cemetery."

I, JOSEPH SMART, Sr. being in perfect mind and memory. I give unto my wife, ELIZABETH SMART, 100 acres of land where I formerly live during her life time or widowhood. Reserving 20 acres of said tract to my son, JOSEPH SMART, which is the old improvement part of the tract, Also I give to my wife 5 head cattle, all household furniture. I give unto son, THOMAS SMART, 184 acres of land where I now live. I give to my dtr. 5 shillings. I give to my son JOHN SMART 5 shillings. I give to my dtr. DICEA BURNS one cow & calf. I give to my grandchild, after my wife's death, RACHEL BROOKS one cow & calf. I give to my three sons all my tools, viz. JOSEPH, WM., & THOMAS SMART. The land I left to my wife, at her death to become the property of my son THOMAS SMART. I appoint my son THOMAS & wife ELIZABETH SMART as my executors. Wit: JAMES BABER, jurat., W. GREEN, Ser.
