It doesn’t grieve our hearts but gives us great joy that on February 24, 2019, Shirley A. Washington went home to be with The Lord. She was born May 22, 1940, at Burrell Memorial Hospital in the City of Roanoke to the late Mr. Charles E. Brown Sr. and Mrs. Marie Hardy Brown. She attended and was a graduate of Lucy Addison High School. She also was a graduate of Vision of Faith Bible College. She worked diligently for National Linen and the Fred Whitaker Company until she answered the call from The Lord to win souls for the Kingdom.

Mother Washington joined Garden of Prayer #6 under the late Pastor Lonnie E. Wilson. She loved the street ministry, and along with her mother she won many souls to Christ. Soul winning was her passion; she has influenced countless people to give their lives to Christ and many stories were told of how she went in homes casting out devils and healing the sick.

In ministry, she met her husband whom she witnessed to and influenced to give his life to Christ. They married and started ministry in the 1970’s in Southwest Roanoke, later moving to Peters Creek Road and finally the Faith and Hope Church at 1802 Orange Avenue. Her desire to teach the word was evident as she was appointed District Superintendent of Sunday school for the Greater Western 3rd Jurisdiction of VA COGIC. Her works for The Lord continued as she was the First Lady, an evangelist, missionary and directed Faith and Hope choir. She had a love for music even travelling with her mother for many years to promote professional quartet artists. Mother Washington worked diligently at the Faith and Hope Church until her last breath. We looked to her as an example of strength, obedience, and perseverance. She was a woman of peace, love, hope, truth and was “no nonsense” concerning the things of God and the word of God.

She was preceded in death by her father, Mr. Charles E. Brown Sr.; mother, Marie Hardy Brown; her husband, Dr. John L. Washington; her brothers, Charles Brown Jr. and John Brown; her nephew, Darrell Brown; great-granddaughter, Erin Goodwin and step-son, Doug Washington.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Terry Lee Board, Evangelist Karen Renee “Cookie” Walker, and special niece who she considered a daughter, Lady Sonya Marie Roman. A special nephew who she considered a son and passed the pastoral baton to, Pastor Samuel (Chris) Roman Jr. Grandchildren, Darise Devone Walker, Derrick Trevaile Walker (Ava), Tasha Lynette Walker, Mashawn Walker, and Timothy Lamont Brown; great-grandchildren, Tashawna, Asia, twins Chase & Chance, Lynia “CeeCee”, Eboni, Taylarh, London, Marqueze, and Armani; great-great grandchildren, Chyna and Cairo. She is also survived by two sisters, Doris Sullivan (Jack) and Mary Elizabeth Watkins (John); special nieces, Shaniqua Covington, Chinene Beane, Danielle Thomas, Jasmine Brown, and Johnetta Calloway; cousins who were like sisters Norma Jean and Mary Smith. Two step-sons, Michael Washington and Brian Washington (Vonda), a step-daughter, Debra Wright, and step- grandchildren, Chinira, Kanisha, Mychal, and Jarmaar. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, and sons and daughters in the Gospel. Devoted members Gloria Franklin, Teresa Gray, and Eric Ferguson; Girlfriends, Joan, Shirley “Doll”, and Bobby Joe; extended family, the Kaufmans; A spiritual son and daughter, Pastor Charles and Ghana Ramey. There were so many special people to her, too many to name them all. All who are in Christ will see her again.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Garden of Prayer No. 7 Vision of Faith Ministries. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
