Michael Lloyd Washington, known as "Sugar Bear", 65, completed his earthly journey on June 8, 2021, at his residence.
He was born February 29, 1956 in Roanoke, VA to the late Dr. John L. Washington and Lois A. Wright Washington. He was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony C. Wright and Douglas W. Washington.
He attended the Roanoke City Schools and graduated from William Fleming High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1979 where he was a Calvary Scout and received an award for being an expert in M-16 riflery. He was honorably discharged in 1981. He took great pride in talking about his tour of duty in Germany as a Buffalo Soldier. He returned to Roanoke, where among his employment he worked for Norfolk Southern (then Norfolk and Western Railway) and the Virginia Veteran's Care Center.
Michael enjoyed having deep conversations with anyone he met. He also enjoyed playing chess, and he was an avid collector of movies. He took great pride in cheering for his favorite football team, the Minnesota Vikings.
Left to treasure his memory are his children, Mychal and Jamarr Washington, and Shamieka Wilson; sister, Deborah C. Wright; brother, Brian C. (Vonda) Washington; aunt, Almarie Chavis; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins; and close friends, Michael Patterson and Cathy M. Bowie.
