Dr. John L. Washington, 79, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday July 4, 2012. He was born on June 6, 1933, to the late Mary Washington and Lloyd Hancock. He was preceded in the death by his son, Doug Washington and stepson, Anthony Wright He retired from the VA Medical Center in Salem after 30 years of service. He was the founder of Faith and Hope Ministries and served faithfully until his death. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 39 years, Shirley Washington; two sons, Michael Washington, of Roanoke and Brian (Vonda) Washington, of Washington, D.C.; three stepdaughters, Karen Walker, Terry Board, both of Roanoke and Debra Wright, of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, John Brown; two sisters-in-law, Mary (John) Watkins and Doris (Jack) Sullivan, all of Roanoke. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special thanks to Medi Home Health and Hospice for their care and the Faith and Hope COGIC members.
Funeral services will be held noon on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Faith and Hope COGIC, 1802 Orange Ave. NW, with Bishop G. W. Hardy officiating. Internment will be in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may call for viewing on Friday July 13, 2012, from noon until 4 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis and viewing will resume at 5 p.m. at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. Arrangements by Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, Roanoke.
