Son of James Robertson Jr. and Elizabeth Crawford.

He married Margaret Robertson on 8-18-1773. She was his cousin, as their fathers were brothers. Margaret's parents were William Robertson and Margaret Gorrell (or Garrel).

Alexander was elected to the Virginia Federal Convention in June of 1788. Six months later, he was elected to the Virginia Legislature.

In December of 1779, he and his family left Virginia and they migrated to Gordon's Station, in Kentucky. He built the first frame house in Garrard County, Kentucky around 1781, at Harlan' Spring, which was at the head of Case Run.

He became the first sheriff of Mercer County, Kentucky.

He died suddenly, at his home, of pneumonia, on 8-15-1802. He left no will.
His widow Margaret got remarried, three years later, in 1805, to Job Johnson, and they moved to Lancaster.
