Willard was the fifth of seven children born to Nathaniel Langell, a Nova Scotian shipwright, and his wife Pauline (McDonald), who was born at Cutler, ME.

Willard, who worked as a Bookkeeper, was twenty years, six months, and nine days old when he died at the family's home located at 80 Saratoga St., East Boston due to Tuberculosis, one of 16 to die of the "White Plague" in Boston that week.
