LIBERTY, Mo. - Honoracia Lulu Young, 86, of Liberty, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at Pleasant Valley Manor.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at Saint James Catholic Church.
Interment will follow in New Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call on the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the church, where the Spanish Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. and the English Rosary will be prayed at 7:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Contributions may be made to the family.
Lulu was born on Dec. 24, 1932, in St. Joseph, to Augustine and Josefa (Suarez) Bernard.
She was raised in St. Joseph, leaving school in the 8th grade to get a job to help her family.
She remained a resident there until the day she married in 1963 and became Robert Lee Young's First Lady. That is when she moved to Liberty, where she remained the rest of her life.
She worked at both Andy's Grocery and The Lunch Box, before working at the Missouri Hospital for Women's Heath, all in St. Joseph.
She worked as a Nurses Aid for North Kansas City Hospital, which she left to become a Full-Time Stay-at-Home Mom.
Then she worked for Liberty Public Schools Food Service and Cedars of Liberty. She retired in 1996 from Liberty Public Schools following 16 years of service, to become a full time "Mimi".
Lulu loved spending time in her kitchen. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and baking for friends and family. Many will remember her for the tamales that she supplied to people throughout the area, which started at the Fall Festival and quickly turned into a year round occurrence.
She also baked wedding and birthday cakes for all of her friends and family. Lulu had a servants heart, which led her to become a confidential confidant who was completely loyal to the absent, and never had a bad or unkind word for anyone.
She loved holidays, especially Christmas and Halloween, and since her children were young, she never missed hosting a New Year's Eve Party for her family, friends and neighbors.
She has been an active member of Saint James Catholic Church since 1963, as well as a member of their Precious Blood Society, the Over 50's Club, and active pen pal with the students at Saint James School.
She also served as a sponsor for many wishing to join the church, and frequently prayed for those that she knew needed it.
Lulu was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, of 28 years when he died in 1991; and siblings, Austin, Sylvester, Angela, Alexander, Margaret, Raymon, Virginia and Nate.
She is survived by: her two daughters, Robin A. Young and Rebecca Lance and her husband, Horton; a step-daughter, Vicki Moore; six grandchildren, JayAnn Lance (Matthew Pennington), MacKenzie Lance, Brett Lance, Trinity White, David Southward III and Lacey Moore; great-grandchildren, Maeve Pennington, True White and Talon White; eight siblings, Louisa McCartney, Willie Bernard and his wife, Loretta, Julia Barnes, Hector Bernard and his wife, Sharon, Rosie DeVinney and her husband, Russ, Sadie Crail and her husband, Rick, Suzanna Crossfield and her husband, Rick, and Paula Deets and her husband, Matt; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
