Samuel Hill wrote in "Bygone Stalybridge":
The "Halls" of Cocker Hill may be traced as follows:
Joseph Hall born about 1726, was at the end of 1788 described as a "cloth miller". He died on 9 December 1799, age 73, and was interred in Cocker Hill Church-yard.
His son was James Hall, who established a business as a cotton spinner in the vicinity of the old Eagle Inn. At the beginning of the 19th Century he migrated to Bowling Green Mills, King Street, where he built a house. (A large house near the fire station).

Whilst Mr Hall was engaged in the carding department of his mill he accidentally got his arm into the machinery and the limb had to be amputated. After this Mr Hall was known amongst his operatives as "Owd Nelson". James Hall, cotton spinner, died 24 May 1848, age 76.

James Hall, of King Street Mill, occupied Higher Mill in 1836, and steam power was being used.
Ownership of King Street Mill passed to James Hall in 1832, his sons built a new mill on the opposite side of King Street in 1850. The new mill was in cotton until the 1870ś and was demolished before 1892.
Rasbottom Mills: Some mills transferred to James Hall, Son & Co, but became disused in the 1880s and were demolished.
