Margaret was named for her grandmother- Margaret Johnstone who married John Simpson 1.
Margaret's parents= John 2 Simpson & wife Alice Palmer (Elcy) were married Sept 28, 1824 in Geneva, NY. They left Geneva NY in 1835 and traveling by boat & wagon, with 5 children under 10 years of age, made the 650 mile journey to start farming in Homer Twp, Will Co, Illinois. They were among the first pioneers to break ground for a farm, on land newly created for settlement, after the defeat of the Natives in the 'Black Hawk Indian War' and the great cholera scare of the time.
They arrived with NY born Simpson children:
John 3 J. Simpson- 10yrs; Andrew M.- 6yrs; Amos- 4yrs; Mary- 8yrs; and Margaret- 1yr old.
Six more of Margaret's siblings were then born there in Will Co., including a daughter Agnes, (no birth date known) who died young.
Margaret's father John 2 Simpson had purchased their farm land from the government, 80 acres of it, on Oct 1, 1839 when Martin Van Buren was President. It was listed as in 'Chicago, the 3rd PM Meridian; 36N Township; Range 12E; Section 30'.
Margaret was still living on that family farm in Homer Twp., Will Co., IL, at age 16 during the 1850 census taken there.
Margaret's family moved between the 1850 and 1860 census to Worth, Cook Co., IL, but it's unknown if Margaret moved with them or stayed behind in Homer, as she was not with her birth family in the 1860 census. She married Matthew Hammond about 1865 and all their Hammond children were born in Illinois: Charles c 1867; Florence A. Dec 1869; Frank E. 1872 died 1899; John Edwin 1875 died 1954; and George E. born & died 1878.
