James left his Simpson's family home in Worth Twp., Cook Co., IL and followed his brother John 3 Simpson & John's wife Sarah Strong Porter to MN shortly after 1854, and purchased several properties in Dakota County.

He sold one piece that later became the A.F. (Almon F.) Howland residence, on which in 1935 the home was made into an apartment for Evelyn Mae Howland- Simpson- Harmer & her and Warren W. Simpson's daughter Rosella.
Evelyn was the daughter of Almon F. Howland and Mary Gaylord.
Evelyn was first the wife of Warren Withers Simpson (grandson of John3 Simpson & Sarah Strong Porter), then Evelyn married Otto Robert Harmer after Warren died.

"SIMPSON, JAMES P., Native of Illinois. Enlisted at age twenty-three in November 20, 1862, and mustered in November 24, 1862. Served with Co. F. 1st Regiment Mounted Rangers. He was discharged with disability on April 21, 1863. He was a cousin of the Howland brothers and sisters."

1st Regiment, Minnesota Cavalry (Mounted Rangers)
Organized at St. Cloud, St. Peters and Fort Snelling, Minn., October 9 to December 30, 1862.
Organized for frontier duty against Indians.
----1st Battalion engaged in frontier duty till June, 1863. ----Sibley's Expedition against Indians in Dakota Territory June 16-September 14.
----Battle of Big Mound, D. T., July 24.
----Dead Buffalo Lake July 26.
----Stony Lake July 28. Missouri River July 28-30.
1st Battalion on duty at Fort Ripley, and rest of Regiment at Fort Snelling, Minn., till December.
Mustered out October 20 to December 7, 1863.

Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 4 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 31 Enlisted men by disease. Total 37.

James enlisted at age 23 on November 20, 1862, and mustered in November 24, 1862. Served with Troop F of the 1st Minnesota Cavalry.

He was discharged with disability on April 21, 1863.

He is the son of John (2) Simpson born Nov. 26, 1798, in Scotland and wife Alice (Elcy) Palmer born 1802 in Phelps, near Geneva, NY.

James is the brother of John (3) J. Simpson b 1825. James and John registered the same day together for the Civil War, both listed as from Waterford, Minnesota.

John and James are both buried at the Red Rose Cemetery with many other Simpson, Dodds, Howland and Harkness relatives (and more).
