Dorothea (Dot) Louise North, age 84, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospice, after a brief illness on January 28, 2019, surrounded by loved ones.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at 2 p.m. at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel, 801 19th St., West Des Moines, IA. A visitation with the family will start at 1 p.m. until the time of the service. A future interment will take place at Resthaven Cemetery.

Dot was born on April 25, 1934 in Milo, Iowa to Jared and Claudia Louise (Fairly) Porter. She was the youngest of 11 children. She was a dedicated and loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her pride and joy were her two children, Tom and Ann, along with their spouses, Marcia and John. Her face lit up when she saw them and her two grandchildren, Rachel and Mike. She recently met her great-grandson, Bode, and was able to hold his sweet hand. Dot never expressed a personal want. Her concern and care was always for her family and friends.

Dot touched many lives with her years of work at Bankers Life Insurance, Des Moines Theatrical Shop, Von Maur, and Homespun Collection. In addition, she loved caring for children in the West Des Moines schools as a childcare provider.

Dot was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She loved knitting prayer shawls for others in need. Dot scrapbooked before scrapbooking was popular. Every event or vacation was published in a special book with her precious hands. Dot kept every letter or memorabilia from her families’ adventures, so she could touch them and reread them often. Dot enjoyed weekend drives with her young family, visiting her family in Wisconsin, and brunches and luncheons with her Iowa family and friends. Dot’s ability to be positive and cheerful will always be remembered. Her gentle and caring manner gave her the ability to be an amazing listener.

Dot is survived by her two children, Tom North (Marcia), Waunakee, WI, Ann Cole (John), West Des Moines, IA; two grandchildren, Rachel Putrino (Rob), Monterey, CA, Mike North, Madison, WI; great-grandson, Bode Putrino, Monterey, CA; sister, Darlene Epps, Carlisle, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Melvin Porter, Marjorie Smith, Beaulah Vuagniaux, Marie Bunce, Robert Porter, Olive Myrick, Ellen Edwards, Dale Porter, and Donald Porter.

We want to thank the nurses and staff at Mercy Hospice-Johnston. All of you helped make her final days pain free and very loving. Memorial contributions can be given in Dot’s honor to Covenant Presbyterian Church or Mercy Hospice-Johnston.

We will dearly miss you and you are truly an inspiration to all of us. On a tender note you left for Tom and Ann, you stated the following: “I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER . . . . . . . . . x o x o Mom”. We will love you and miss you more than you’ll ever know!
