Donald Roy Porter, 76, passed away Wednesday, July 12 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Don was born July 21, 1929, in Ackworth, Iowa, to Jared and Claudia Fairley Porter. He attended school in Milo and graduated from A of M. He spent his life doing what he loved, sales. He started his sales career at age 11 selling the Grit newspaper. When he was 13, he started driving a truck for Charlie Robinson. His passion for trucking grew into a business, Don Porter Ag Lime and Rock. In 1959, he moved his business to Indianola. He sold Pioneer Seed and was top salesman for many years. From 1989 to the present, he sold advertising specialties and promotional items for J. Thomas Recognition Group.Retirement was not his dream. He loved people and enjoyed calling on customers daily. As a life-long Democrat, he was the eternal optimist even through the farm crisis of the 80's.In 1951, he married Norma Downey with three children born of this union, Dan, DeAnna and Dean.He was very active in the Indianola Community. He served on the Indianola Development Board and the Indianola Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Committee and was honored as Chamber volunteer of the year. He served as Parade Chairman of Log Cabin Days for 25 years and was a supporter of the U.S. National Balloon Championship in its infancy.In 1977, he married his best friend and wife of 33 years, Judy Myers Piffer. Of this union, he was blessed with not a step-daughter, but a loved daughter, Michelle.He loved to entertain family and friends and could organize a party for 40 in 30 minutes. He was an avid collector of Warren County artifacts and enjoyed reaping the rewards of his wife's flower gardening.He served as Potentate of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in 1987 and founded the Young Shriner's Club. He served as President of the Warren County Shrine, was a member of the Indianola Masonic Lodge, Warren County Shrine, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Des Moines Consistory and the Royal Order of Jesters. He was an honorary member of the Royal Order of Groundhogs.He was preceded in death by his parents, Jared and Claudia Fairley Porter; brothers, Melvin, Robert and Dale "Hoover"; sisters, Beulah Vaugniaux and Olive Myrick; and grandson, Travis Henning. Survivors include his wife, Judy (JP); daughters, DeAnna (Jim) Henning of Sioux City, IA and Michelle Kelley of Arvada, CO; sons, Dan (Kristi) of Indianola and Dean (Linda) of Lenexa, KS; nine grandchildren, Asia, Jake, Kendon, Calla, Case, Addison, Madison, Olivia and Carolyn; five great-grandchildren, Jake, Hannah, Ethan, Joshua and Jackson; and sisters, Darlene Epps of Carlisle, Ellen (Charles) Edwards of Ashville, NC, Marie Bunce of Hialeah, FL, Marjorie Smith of Des Moines and Dorothea North of West Des Moines; and sister-in-law, Helen Porter of Garland, TX.
