Youngest son of The Honourable Judge Jonathan Sewell and Henrietta {Smith} Sewell, his wife, of Quebec City

Algernon Robinson Sewell entered military service with the 15th Foot, later the East Yorkshire Regiment, at the age of 20 as an Ensign, by purchase, on 16 February 1838. Promoted Lieutenant by purchase, 18 September 1840; appointed Adjutant, 16 May 1845

On 14 March 1850 in St Paul's Church of England, at Kandy, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Adjutant Sewell married Henrietta Caroline Staples, daughter of John James Staples and Anna Loughlin. There were no children of the marriage

Promoted Captain, by purchase, 28 June 1850; raised to the rank of Major (without purchase) on 12 November 1858 to take the place of Major Mansergh who had been dismissed from the service by the sentence of a General Court Martial. On 1 April 1866 he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel on half pay, at the age of 48

Lt Col Sewell died of an inflamation of the lungs in his 58th year, and was interred in Mount Hermon Cemetery on 12 January 1875
