Nellie Joyce Morton Allison and her twin sister Nettie Gladys were born at 4am on May 30, 1892, successfully delivered by their father, John Lawsha Morton, in the family home near Cassville, Barry County, Missouri. When Dr. Overton arrived from Cassville 2 hours later, he found every detail "under control" and the twins and mother healthy.

Nellie and Nettie had five older sisters, two older brothers, and a younger brother. Two of their siblings had died before they were born, and sadly, Nettie died at age two.

Nellie and her family lived in Barry and Jasper counties in Missouri, moving whenever her dad, a well-respected, sought-after millwright, had been hired to build a flour or saw mill. Some time in the 1910s, the family moved to Arkansas, where she met and married John Philip Allison, and where their only daughter Betty (Bennie Elizabeth) was born, in the same room in the same home where Nellie and John had been married.

The Allisons had 7 children, four of whom grew to adulthood: Betty, Lute, Rolland and James. Two boys died at birth, another boy, Max, died from complications of scarlet fever when he was 14.

They lived in in Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming, before moving to Wisconsin in the 1950s. They were living in Sheboygan when John died in 1975. Nellie lived on her own for a number of years before moving to a care facility in Chilton as her memory failed and her dementia progressed.

The obituary that appeared in the Chilton Times Journal, September 18, 1986, had many errors so I'm only including the factual information:

"Mrs. Nellie J. Allison, 94, formerly of 2412 South 15th Street, Sheboygan, a resident of Chilton village Nursing Home for the past several years, died there Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1986.... On October 29, 1916 she married the Rev. John P. Allison in Cavesprings, Arkansas.... Mrs. Allison was a member of Fountain Park United Methodist Church, Sheboygan.

Survivors include three son, Lute of Chilton, Rolland of Pewaukee and James of Coral Springs, Florida; one daughter, Mrs. Hyatt (Betty) Moore of Magalia, California; 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters.

Funeral services were held at Fountain Park Methodist Church, with the Rev. Raymond Kitwicki, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens Cemetery. "

Nellie was my grandmother. She loved to read and thought books to be excellent gifts. I still own many of the books she gave me as birthday and Christmas presents.
