Jim was born in a hospital, delivered by Dr. Ray Taylor. He weighed 9 pounds and had black hair. He was the youngest of 7 children born to John Philip Allison and Nellie Joyce Morton Allison. He and his siblings moved often while growing up, living in Yuma and Peetz, Colorado, and Luray and Winfield, Kansas, where Jim graduated from high school.
Jim and Rosella met at Lark United Methodist Church in Greenleaf, Wisconsin after Jim was discharged from service. Jim's father was the minister, Rosella's father was the church organist and her mother was a Sunday school teacher. They married on 22 June 1957 at Lark Church, the ceremony officiated by Jim's father.
The couple moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he attended college on the GI Bill. Jim's work took them to many places, including several Chicago suburbs, Pennsylvania, England and Florida before they moved to Oregon to be near their children.
