Leon "Lee" James Schroeder, 78, Fifield, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Peterson Rehabilitation Center, Rhinelander. He was born March 28, 1921, the son of William and Matie (Knight) in the town of Rolling, Langlade County.

He graduated from Antigo High School in 1939. During World War II he served as a bombardier pilot in the Army Air Corps, European Theatre from 1943-45, discharged as a captain. From 1945-1955 he was in the Army Air Reserve. He married Emily Zellmer of Antigo in Birmingham, Ala. She preceded him in death in 1970. The couple had three daughters.

He attended UW-Madison and obtained a BBA in business and finance in 1949 and graduated from the first NABAC (now Banking Administration Institute) class in 1955. He worked in Monroe at First National Bank of Monroe from 1949-1966; was vice president of the State Bank of Hartland from 1967-69. In 1970 he organized the Hartland National Bank where he served as president until 1974.

He married Patricia McConnell of Oconomowoc in 1971. The couple owned and operated the Valley Motel, Park Falls, from 1975-1980 when he retired. During retirement the couple were active in the Price County historical Society, curating the Old Town Hall Museum. He served as the society's treasurer from 1980-1998.

He served as president of Capitol City Conference, NABAC, in 1955 and Green County Bankers Association. He was a Mason and president of the Monroe Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arthur, Russell and Donald; and a sister, Dorothy.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Laura (Mike) Brandt, Golden, Colo.; Jane, Livingston, Wis.; Sue, Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Harold, Florence, Wis.; a granddaughter, Sara Joe Brandt, Kimberly; and nieces and nephews.
