Garber, the first Brethren minister to settle permanently in the Shenandoah Valley. They were married in Pennsylvania, lived in Frederick County, Maryland for a time, then migrated to the Valley in 1775. The family settled on a large farm in the vicinity of Flat Rock and Holman's Creek, Shenandoah County, Va.
The story is told that Barbara Garber walked to Maryland and Pennsylvania and back again on two different occasions to visit relatives. The round-tripp distance for each visit was nearly 400 miles. In her husband's will, Barbara Garber was given " her bed, her cupboard, a cow, a good spinning wheel, and a choice of two sheep so that she may not have just cause or reason to complain."
She was the mother of 10 children, all who reached adulthood. They were John, Samuel, Martin, Anna, Abraham, Jacob, Daniel, Catherine, Joseph, and Magdalene. Of the seven sons, six became ministers in the Church of the Brethren and the other became a deacon. Of the three daughers, two became wives of leading ministers of the Brethren Church.
