Mary Elizabeth Usery, age 99 of Athens, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018 at her residence. Mrs. Usery was known by “Bet” to friends and family. She was born January 3, 1919 in Limestone County to David Bates and Marcena Allen Bates.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 41 years, Coy Lindsey Usery, one son, Jerry Usery, and three brothers.
Mrs. Usery was a member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking for friends and family. Mrs. Usery could do just about anything. She farmed, owned a country store, salon, flower shop, and a daycare. Her favorite thing was having her family over to her home and cooking for them.
Survivors include one son Jimmy Usery of Athens; her daughter in law, Mary Lynn Usery of Athens; six grandchildren, Liz Doucusen of Westland, MI; Chris Usery (Karen) of Ardmore, AL; Stephen M. Usery (Allison) of Athens, AL; Michelle Hastings (Terry) of Ardmore, AL; Deela Hicklen (Lee) of Athens, AL; Anna Grace Usery of Oxford, MS; ten great grandchildren; Cody Usery, Lyndsey Markiewicz, Dustin Murphy, Christian Coy Usery, Elizabeth Paige Usery, Matthew Stephen Usery, Stratton Hastings, Haley Hastings, Jesse Hicklen, Hadley Hicklen; five great great grandchildren, Alanah Leora Usery, Brady Markiewicz, Dustin Murphy, Connor Murphy, Jayda Murphy, several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jesse Hicklen, Lee Hicklen, Chris Usery, Christian Usery, and Matthew Usery. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Hasting, Jimmy Usery, Lenzy Bates, and Stephen Usery. Funeral service will be Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 1 p.m. at McConnell Memorial Chapel with Brother David Cox officiating and visitation from 10-1. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
