Son of Dietrich Otto Semken and Gesina Fincke, husband of Mary Elizabeth Swamback, whom he married on June 30, 1887 in Brooklyn, NY, and father of Charles Henry Semken. Brother of Claus Johann Heinrich "Charles Henry" Semken.

Husband of Mary W. Ahrens, whom he married on September 27, 1893 in Brooklyn, NY, and father of Helen, Alfred Carsten, May, Mary Catherine, and Evelyn Adeline Louise Semken.

In 1880, Alfred Semken, aged 9, was living in Charleston, South Carolina, in the home of his uncle, Henry Semken, aged 36, a retail grocer, and aunt, Mata Semken, aged 30, with siblings, Claus Semken, aged 15, Henry Semken, aged 13, and Tina Semken, aged 12, and cousins, Dora Semken, aged 7, John Semken, aged 5, Anne Semken aged 3, and aunt Gesine Semken, aged 39.

On December 10th, 1891, his wife, Mary E. Semken, aged 23 years, died at 41 Queen Street, Charleston, South Carolina, of Phthisis Pulmonosis as certified by J.S. Buel M.D., and was buried in Sayville, L.I. by Rehlkopp, Undertaker. She had lived in the city for three months.

In 1892, Alfred Semken, aged 20, a blacksmith, was living in Brooklyn, NY, with his brother, Henry Semken, aged 25, a driver, in the home of Martha Ahrens, aged 59, and her children, Lena Ahrens, aged 30, a dressmaker, Charles Ahrens, aged 26, a butcher, Mary Ahrens, aged 18, a dressmaker, and Ada Ahrens, aged 16, a dressmaker.

In 1910, Alfred Semken, aged 38, was living on 49th Street in Brooklyn, NY, with his wife, Mary Semken, aged 36, to whom he had been married for 16 years, and his children, Helen Semken, aged 12, Alfred C. Semken Jr., aged 6, May Semken, aged 4, and Adeline Semken, aged 4. He was shown to be a blacksmith.

In 1930, Alfred Semken, aged 58, born in South Carolina, was living at 350 74th Street, Brooklyn, NY, with his wife, Mary W. Semken, aged 56, and children, Alfred C. Semken, aged 26, Mary K. Semken, aged 24, and Adeline L. Semken, aged 20. Alfred, the elder, was shown to be a finance inspector.

Obituary - Alfred Semken, of 350 74th Street, connected for many years with the Department of Finance of the city, died at his home yesterday. He was 71.

Mr. Semken, who retired in 1940, was active in fraternal affairs and was the last surviving charter member of Excelsior Encampment, 134, I.O.O.F. He was a member of Greenwood Lodge, 569, F. &. A. M., and Artistic Lodge, 101, I.O.O.F., and the Fourth Avenue Methodist Church.

Surviving are his widow, Mary; two children, Mrs. John MacHenry and Alfred C. Semken, and a sister, Mrs. Tena Semken.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Fred Herbst Sons Memorial, 7501 5th Avenue. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery.
