This is Civil War Pvt. William F Shepherd's original monument in the cemetery known down through the years variously as Reese, Hardin, Flint &/or Farlow Cemetery, New London Twp, Henry Co, Iowa.
"The New London Journal Centennial, 1875-1975" p. 63: "The New London Journal of June 8, 1916, listed these Civil War veterans buried in cemetaries of New London vicinity: Reese Cemetery, ...William Shepherd..."
Roster and Record of IOWA SOLDIERS in the War of the Rebellion
together with historical sketches of Volunteer Organizations 1861-1866. VOL. IV page 1367
"Shepherd, William. Age 19. Residence New London, nativity Iowa. Enlisted May 18, 1863. Mustered June 3, 1863. Transferred to Company E, Seventh Cavalry Reorganized."Service Record:
Enlisted as a private on 18 May 1863 at the age of 19. Enlisted in Company #, 7th Cavalry Regiment Iowa on 03 June, 1863.
Mustered out Company E, 7th Cavalry Regiment Iowa on 17 May 1866 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

This shows the area of Reese, Hardin, Flint &/or Farlow cemetery with Pvt. William F Shepherd's new monument ordered from the Dept of Veterans Affairs by the Henry Co historic committee. It appears that his GAR marker may have been stuck into the dirt in front of this new monument.
