He married Margaret Gillespie Long at First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro, NC in 1952, graduated from King College in Bristol, Tennessee in 1956 and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia in 1958. Lew was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister serving churches in Eastern North Carolina. In 1962 he joined the Navy Chaplain Corps and throughout his career rose to the rank of Captain. During his 25 years in the Navy, Lew served tours across the country and Europe from Alaska to Maine, Rhode Island to Okinawa, Virginia, Charleston, Sicily and Naples, Italy. While serving in Naples, he and Margaret had a private audience with Pope John Paul II. Lew received two Meritorious Service Medals and retired from the Navy in 1987. He served Spring Hill and Covenant Presbyterian Churches in Staunton, Virginia for almost twenty years, and also served as the Moderator of the Shenandoah Presbytery. In 2015 Lew and Margaret moved to Hamilton, Ohio to be closer to family. They were warmly welcomed by the Berkeley Square community and the congregation at The Hamilton Presbyterian Church and have made many wonderful friends here. In the last few years, Lew loved sitting on his patio with friends and family, smoking his pipe and fishing with his son John. Lew was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Staunton, Virginia, the Sons of the American Revolution and was the oldest member of the Hamilton Rotary Club. Lew is survived by his wife Margaret Long Lewis; sons Mark of Houston, Texas; John (Heather) of Hamilton, Ohio; Bryan (Marisa) of Philadelphia, and his four beloved grandchildren Taylor, Madison, Jackson, and Isabel who will miss him dearly. Lew's family thanks the staff at Colonial at Home, Berkeley Healthcare and Queen City Hospice for the care they provided. A Worship and Celebration of Life service will take place at the Presbyterian Church on Front Street on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11am with a reception to follow.
