Thomas inherited some of his father's land, but resided with his brother Edward Brinton Darlington at the homestead of their youth until his death. In 1838, he conveyed his land inheritance to Edward for a monetary consideration. Thomas retained many family documents and papers, and it is to his credit that much of the family history can be traced and documented. Thomas remained unmarried.
About twenty years after his brother Edward's death, Edward's widow, Hannah Sharpless Darlington, sold the family homestead to Abram Huey and removed to West Chester, thus ending family occupancy of the original holding.
