OBITUARY - MR L. S. CHAMBERLAIN - FORMERLY OF CAMBRIDGE
The death has occurred of Mr Lionel Shafto Chamberlain, formerly of Cambridge, and later of Horsham Downs, aged 53. Born in Wanganui, he was educated at Wanganui Collegiate School and later took up farming. When the Great War began he went overseas with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Severely wounded at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, he returned to New Zealand crippled for life. He undertook farming ventures in the Waikato, first at Hairini and latterly at Cambridge and Horsham Downs. He is survived by his wife and three children. His father, the late Mr Robert Chamberlain, of Wanganui, was a cousin of the late Mr Neville Chamberlain, formerly Prime Minister of Great Britain. (Waikato Independent, Nov. 24, 1941 and The Press, Nov. 28, 1941)

SOLEMN CEREMONY - LATE LIONEL CHAMBERLAIN - ASHES SCATTERED ON FARM
A solemn and unique ceremony was performed on a recent morning when the ashes of the late Lionel Shafto Chamberlain were reverently scattered over his property in the Hairini district. The urn containing the ashes was brought to Te Awamutu by Mrs Chamberlain and her two daughters (Mrs Kenneth McGregor, of Hamilton, and Miss Betty Chamberlain), and, covered with a Union Jack, carried to an aeroplane waiting on the race-course. The ’plane is the private property of Mr H. T. Morton (Mayor of Te Kuiti), who is himself a returned soldier and who lost a leg in the Great War. A short service was conducted by the Rev. Harold Heaslip, Vicar of Mt. Roskill and brother of Mrs Chamberlain. The urn was handed to Flight Lieutenant W. Mackenzie, who then took off. When the ’plane was over Hairini, the ashes were reverently cast to the winds, being ultimately deposited on the property which, in his life-time, the late Mr Chamberlain had farmed so well. (Waikato Independent, Dec. 12, 1941)

NOTE: Also father of Betty Wynne Chamberlain (born July 6, 1923)
