Ralph was the son of John Grant and Jesse Coutts. The family(two sisters) lived near Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to the US in 1911, settling in the San Diego area.
Ralph married Florence Elizabeth Ford on August 7, 1937 in Oakland, California. They had two daughters and one son while living there, later moving to the San Francisco area.
He worked in banking as a manager.
