Civil Engineer, Attorney. He was born at Woburn, Massachusetts, a son of Col. Loammi Baldwin, for whom the Baldwin apple is named. He received his early education at Westford Academy and graduated from Harvard College in 1800. After an apprenticeship at a law office in Groton, Massachusetts, he started his own law practice in Cambridge in 1804. He later gave up the practice of law to pursue his interest in engineering, opening a practice in Charlestown, Massachusetts. As an engineer he was involved in the construction of Fort Strong in Boston Harbor as well as naval dry docks at the Boston Navy Yard and in Norfolk, Virginia, among many other projects. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1810 and was involved in the planning of the Bunker Hill monument. He died before completing his work to obtain a safe drinking water supply for the City of Boston.
