South Carthage resident Mrs. Ruth Callis McDonald died Tuesday morning, October 9, 2018 at the Concordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. in the Riverview Regional Emergency Room following a valiant battle with cancer. Mrs. McDonald was 80.

Funeral services were conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon, October 11 with her pastor, Bro. Scott Ezell officiating. Interment followed the 1:00 p.m. service in the Garden of the Cross at Defeated Creek Memorial Gardens.

Born Naomi Ruth Henry in the Difficult Community on September 8, 1938, she was one of ten children of the late Melvin Lee Henry and Willie Mai Woodard Henry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Mike, Larry, and Troy Henry; and a granddaughter, Amy Kambeck who died September 18, 2010.

On November 10, 1955, she was united in marriage to Carl Kenneth Callis, the father of her children. He preceded her in death on September 20, 1998 following almost 43 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Charles Franklin McDonald on September 17, 2005.

Mrs. McDonald was a homemaker and before relocating to South Carthage had for many years made her home in the Defeated Creek Community.

She was a member of the Carthage Church of the Nazarene and was baptized on June 25, 1950 at the age of 11 at the Inglewood Church of the Nazarene, where she had attended since she was 8 years old.

Surviving are three children, Jeff Callis & wife Debbie of Jamestown, Ron Callis Sr. & wife Melissa of Watertown, Pam Callis Musgrove & husband Steve of Carthage; six siblings, Bessie Harper of Nashville, Kenneth Henry & wife Barbara of Nashville, Barbara Denning & husband James of Madison, Carolyn Bishop & husband Anthony of Morrison, Roger Henry of Madison, Deborah Cook-Rife & husband Tracy of Murfreesboro; six grandchildren, Elissa, Ron Jr., Aubrey, Doug, Kenny, & Leah; 19 great-grandchildren; several loving nieces and nephews.
