Daughter of Elliott Tutt (b. VA)and Margaret Sample (b. IN); wife of Samuel Byerley. Samuel Byerley was the son of Thomas E. A. Byerley (b. Austria) and Anne Rooney (b. Ireland).

Born Lillian Lewis Tutt, she was the youngest child of Elliott and Margaret Tutt. Mrs. Tutt, the daughter of Samuel Caldwell Sample, had three children from a previous marriage (to Albert Monson): Anna Rose, Walter Sample and Ella Albert Monson. Elliott and Margaret had five daughters: Mary Howard, Mary Katharine, Elizabeth Elliott, Lucy Howard, and Lillian Lewis Tutt, our subject. Elliott Tutt was a farmer and a tanner who came to South Bend in October 1832 with his brothers and sister. He held the positions of Township Trustee and School Trustee for a number of years, and had been a member of the City Council.

Lillian married 1st Robert W. Curtis (b. Ohio, son of Julius and Eliza Curtis) on May 4, 1882 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Lillian and Robert Curtis has at least one child, Elliott Tutt Curtis, b. Oct. 19, 1883 in Lee, White County, Iowa. The young family can be found in Keokak, Iowa (which was then a part of Jackson County) in the 1885 Iowa Census. Robert was a civil engineer, working on bridge construction in Iowa. Young Elliott passed away in 1886. This researcher was unable to locate a death record for the child, but fellow graver Thomas was able to locate the cemetery record and create a memorial for the toddler, which graver Joyce Young touchingly photographed.

One can presume the couple divorced sometime prior to 1888, as Lillian married 2nd Samuel Byerley on Oct. 2, 1888 in Chicago, Illinois. Robert Curtis was also remarried, to Martha Gardner, on September 23, 1889 in Shelby County, Tennessee.

Samuel and Lillian had at least three children together: Vera (b. circa Oct. 1890 IN), Cecil (b. Feb. 1, 1893 IL) and Evelyn Hope (b. circa Apr. 1897 MO). Samuel also had two daughters and a son from a previous marriage to Blanche Bope - Mary Anna (b. circa 1879 IN), Blanche (b. circa Sept. 1881 IN), and Peter (b. Sept. 6, 1884). Samuel was a clerk for the railroad, a stock broker, and then a music publisher, and the family seems to have moved around quite a bit, going from Illinois, where they married, to Indiana, where their daughter Vera was born, back to Illinois, where their son Cecil was born, to Missouri, where their daughter Evelyn was born, to New Jersey, where they are documented in the 1900 US Census, to New York, where they are documented in the 1910 US Census, and finally back to New Jersey, where they are documented in the 1915 NJ Census.

Daughter Vera Byerley married 1st Guillermo Lavergne (b. circa 1876 in St. Thomas, Dutch West Indies, widower of Brigida Yordán de Lavergne) in Manhattan on May 15, 1907. There are three Lavergne children, all born in the West Indies, residing with Lillian and Samuel in New York in 1910. These minor children, ages 9, 7, and 6, listed as 'lodgers' in the household, and are likely the stepchildren of their daughter. (Vera and Guillermo are counted as guests at the Hotel Lucerne in Manhattan in this particular census). Vera Byerley Lavergne, widow, married 2nd Oswald Lindo (b. Panama) on November 21, 1919 in Manhattan. Of note is a minor child with the surname Lindo, born in the West Indies, who also resided as a 'lodger' with Samuel and Lillian Byerley in 1910. Vera and Oswald divorced before 1930, and in 1933, Vera married 3rd divorcee Dr. Fenwick Beekman.

Son Cecil would go on to marry divorcee Ethel Dorothy _____ MacKenzie, called 'Dorothy', in Manhattan on April 24, 1937, and they made their home in Westchester, New York. Cecil passed away in January 1966 in New York. His wife Dorothy passed away in January 1992 in Westchester.

Daughter Evelyn married Lt. Commander Jay Knight Esler, US Navy, on Dec. 6, 1916 in Washington, D.C., and they resided in Annapolis when Lillian's husband, Samuel, passed away in Washington, D.C. in 1926. Evelyn and Jay had at least two children, Jay Knight Esler, Jr. (b. circa 1923 in New York) and Vera (b. circa 1928 in France). Evelyn and Jay later divorced, and Evelyn married 2nd Hainer Hinshaw, son of Stephen Curtis Hinshaw and Hannah Brickell. Hainer passed away in Michigan in 1965. Evelyn passed away in Michigan in 1971.
