A runaway trailer truck traveling west on the wrong side of Rte. 9 here smashed head on into a Toyota Land Cruiser Saturday evening, killing Timothy S. Pike, 30, of Main Street, Wilmington, his wife, Hillary, 25, and their 4-year-old son, Zachary. Another son, Joshua, 2, suffered third-degree burns on his face and was listed in fair condition today at the Albany, N.Y. Medical Center Hospital. The accident, which occurred at 6:49 p.m. Saturday, followed by one-week a car motorcycle collision at about the same spot: Dunville Notch at the foot of Woodford Mountain. The driver of that motorcycle, Thomas W. Brooks, 27, of Bomoseen was still listed in critical condition today at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. According to those at the scene of Sunday's crash, the Pike's Toyota was ripped apart by the collision and its passengers were flung from the vehicle. Even the truck, a furniture truck leased to Wheaton Van Lines of Indianapolis, Ind., but registered in Alabama, was destroyed. The driver of the truck, Willie Mathews, 45, of Montgomery, Ma., suffered a broken back and was listed in stable condition at Putnam Memorial Hospital today. His passenger, Willie Smith, 29, received multiple bruises and was treated and released from Putnam Memorial Hospital. According to state police the truck's brakes failed while descending Woodford Mountain.
