She was born May 14, 1921 in Thalia, Texas, one of eleven children born to Will Luther and Celia Etta (French) Johnson.
Mary Jo accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and has served Him faithfully over the years. She and John were married June 5, 1952 in Amarillo, Texas by the Rev. Hal Upchurch. She was a faithful wife, mother, and a great supporter of John's 46 years of ministry .
She was a member of Linden Heights Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher and in various capacities in the churches they pastored.
In addition to her loving husband, family members include two daughters, Gloria De Leon of Clovis, California and Marcia Gray of Norfolk; two sons, Nathan Sullivan of Woodford and Victor Sullivan of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Price of Palestine, Texas and Claudia Niel of Oxnard, California; and two brothers, R. E. Johnson of Amarillo, Texas and Bobby D. Johnson of Marshall, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon D. Gibson; three sisters, Virgie Greer of Amarillo, Texas, Vinnie Shook of Denver City, Texas, and Willie May Tucker of Vernon, Texas; and three brothers, O'Neal Johnson of Crowell, Texas, Reed Johnson of Midland, Texas, and Woodrow Johnson of Amarillo, Texas.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2007 in Linden Heights Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Charles Smiley, Jack Burgess, Boyd "Buck" Brown, James "Jimmy" Snyder, Charles Hisey, Doug Hall, and Otis Feaganes.
Honorary pallbearers will be member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2007 in the Henry Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Linden Heights Baptist Church Building Fund, 371 Linden Drive, Staunton, VA 24401
