Mamie Mae Hardin was born to John Jonathan Johnson Hardin and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Rhea in Blum, Hill Co, Texas. In 1916, she married Thomas Jefferson Simmons II, thirty years her senior. She had been working as a clerk in one of his general stores and after his second wife died, they were married.

Grandma Simmons was a very sweet, loving grandmother and great-grandmother.

She raised Sophenia Josephine "Doolie" Simmons, Thomas' daughter by his second wife.

Mamie and Thomas had the following children:

* Thomas Jefferson Simmons III, 1917 - 1925
* John Daniel Simmons, 1919 - 1999
* Mary Oleta Simmons (White) 1921 - living as of 2009
* Franklyn Thomas "Buddy" Simmons, 1923 - 2015
