Thomas Jefferson Simmons II was born in 1869 to Thomas Jefferson Simmons I and Sophenia Josephine Holder in a wagon after being chased by Comanche Indians. He grew up in Brown and Coleman Counties of Texas.

Tom owned general stores in Whon, Gasoline, Odell and Tell, Texas. In the early 1920's, he sold his stores and bought a farm about 5 miles south of Tell, in Childress County. The twin disasters of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930's caused the farm to fail and he moved into Childress, where he retired.

Tom Simmons was married three times. He had an adopted daughter, Lela Carlisle, daughter of his first wife Lenora Ross. Lenora died in 1907 in Childress, TX. He next married Alice Diggs of Childress. Tom and Alice had two children, only the daughter Doolie survived. Alice died in childbirth of their second child, when the doctor was drunk and caused her to bleed out. Tom then married Mamie Mae Hardin and they were married for the rest of his life. Tom and Mamie had six children, four of who lived to adulthood.

Tom loved his children passionately. He was a firm but fair man, who was liked by all who knew him. He was married three times and had nine children, one which was adopted. Three of his children died as infants.
