Claus Bollwinkel was born in Hannover, Germany about 1815. He appears to have immigrated to New York City about 1840 and naturalized in 1852. His will written in 1866 identifies a daughter Anna, wife of Henry Helmke who was born in Germany in November 1839 [per 1900 census]. It seems likely that the first wife of Claus Bollwinkel died in Germany shortly after the birth of this child and shortly before his voyage to America.
Claus Bollwinkel and Margaretta Tietjen were probably married in New York City but no record has been found. Claus and Margaretta had three known children: Wilhelmina born about 1854, Nicholas AKA Claus born about 1856 and Henry born December 1861.
Claus Bollwinkel resided in New York City in the 1850s and worked as a grocer. For example, here is a city directory listing: Bullwinkel, Claus, grocer, 374 Sixth av. h 64 W.23d; New York, New York, City Directory, 1857, page 116. His address in the city directory matches the address on the naturalization card.
By 1860 Claus was farming in Yorktown, Westchester County, New York near the Pines Bridge post office in the southern portion of the township. His name is given in the 1860 census as “Chas” but the family information matches up with what we know about his family from other records.
His real estate was valued at $2000. Living with him was his wife, Margaret, daughter, Minna (Wilhelmina) and son Nicholas who was also known as Claus in some records. Also, in the household with Claus Sr. is Henry Bollwinkel born about 1825 who might be his brother. The farm in Yorktown was acquired in May 1860 as shown by the Grantee Index for Westchester County, New York showing land granted to Claus Bollwinkel from John Palmer and Henry Siericks in Book 437 pages 106 and 111.
His obituary appeared in a New York newspaper and provides us with the date and the location of death as follows:
BULLWINKEL--On Wednesday, August 22, at his residence, near Sing Sing, Claus Bullwinkel, in the 51st year of his age.
The funeral will take place from No. 271 West Thirty-ninth street, between Ninth and Tenth avenues, in this city, this (Friday) afternoon, half-past one o'clock. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. The New York Herald., August 24, 1866, Page 3, Image 3, Column 3 .
The cemetery office has a record of Claus Bollwinkel dated August 24, 1866 which is presumably his date of burial and matches with the date of the funeral from the obituary. Claus Bollwinkel is listed as the purchaser of Family Lot # 77, Map # 1B.
