"Active LDS Worker Dies During Priesthood Meet --- Joseph A. Bateman, 74, 834 Browning Ave. (1425 South) suffered a heart attack while attending Priesthood meeting at the Hawthorne Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, 808 Roosevelt Ave. (1445 South), Sunday at 9:09 a.m. and was pronounced dead minutes later at a Salt Lake hospital.
"A police ambulance team was dispatched to the chapel and attempted to revive the victim with oxygen.
"Joseph Alberto Bateman was born June 24, 1884, in Alpine, Utah County, to Joseph T. and Julia Clara Strong Bateman.
"He married Ada Gunn Sept. 27, 1911, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
"A former bishop of the Elsinore, Sevier County, LDS Ward, he served an LDS mission in the eastern states from 1908 to 1910 and was a high priest in the Hawthorne LDS Ward.
"A retired insurance agent, Mr. Bateman worked for California Western States Insurance Co. for 25 years and for Pacific National Life Insurance Co. for five years.
"Surviving are his widow; three sons, three daughters: Max G., Fred T., and Bryce Bateman, Mrs. William (Bertha) Heath, all of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Gene (Virginia) Wilson, Evansville, Ind.; Mrs. Jack (Bernice) Dilleree, Portland, Ore.; 14 grandchildren.
"Also surviving are four brothers, three sisters: William A. and Samuel S. Bateman, both of Salt Lake City; Frank and Waldo Bateman, both of Alpine; Mrs. George Dunsdon, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; Mrs. Emma Jacobsen, Springville; Mrs. Ardella Ford, Cedar City.
"Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in the Hawthorne LDS Ward chapel, 808 Roosevelt Ave. (1449 South).
