Son of John Stafford, native of South Carolina and wife Mary Murphy Stafford, native of North Carolina, who later resided in Carroll County, Mississippi.

On 07 December 1856 Murdock M. Stafford married Mrs. Sarah Caroline Williams, widow of Henry J. Williams of Pickens County, Alabama. By 18 September 1860 she was deceased & Murdock became the guardian of her children: Mary Jane, Henry, Wincie Ann, Susan E. & Isabella Williams, all born in Alabama.

Murdock M. Stafford enlisted 08 April 1862 for three years service with the Mississippi 30th Infantry Regiment. He was listed last on the July & August 1863 Muster Roll. Probate Court records from Carroll County, Mississippi state he died in 1863 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

"The 30th Mississippi Infantry Regiment was organized during the early summer of 1862 at Grenada, Mississippi. Its members were raised in the counties of Lafayette, Choctaw, Montgomery, Grenada, Yazoo, and Carroll. After serving in Kentucky the unit was assigned to General Walthall's and Brantley's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It fought with the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, was with Hood in Tennessee, and saw action in North Carolina. It sustained 209 casualties at Murfreesboro, 124 at Chickamauga, and 149 at Chattanooga."
