Son of Neill Stafford and wife Rosanna McNeill Stafford. John married Mary Murphy 08 August 1822. Mary and John had at least ten children: Murdock Murphy, Edwin Neill, John C., Archibald, Murphy Duncan, Catherine, Daniel S., Mary, Malcolm & William Alexander, all born in South Carolina except the last three who were born in Mississippi. Six of their eight sons served the CSA during the Civil War. Daughter Catherine (1831-1858) married Solomon Forehand & daughter Mary Jane (1841-1909) married John Gilbert.

Montgomery County, Mississippi was formed on May 31, 1871 from portions of both Carroll and Choctaw counties. It is possible that John and Mary fell within Montgomery County after its formation. They were listed on the 01 June 1870 census in Township 18, Range 5, Carroll County, Mississippi with real estate valued at $400.

Dates of birth, dead & marriage taken from the DAR ancestor record for Neill Stafford, Ancestor A108091, National number 722964, including the Stafford family bible.

Burial location taken from the dedication by the Mississippi Society, Colonial Dames XVII Century for his brother Daniel Stafford's service in the War of 1812. The biography states that John Stafford was also buried here as well as his wife Mary, sister Katherine Stafford Young Williams and sister Nancy Stafford McAllister and husband Archibald McAllister.
