Matthias Vaught was born at sea in route from from Hanover, Germany to Charleston, SC of his parents Matthias Vaught and his wife Mary Elizabeth Vaught. Matthias was 10 days old when he reached America with his parents.
Matthias Vaught married Mary Mercy Todd about 1770. She was the daughter of Captain Charles Todd.

Matthias Vaught and his wife settled in the Conway section of SC he was of considerable wealth and influence. He had a large plantation with a large number of negro slaves.

Matthias and his wife settled on a plantation between Wampee and Red Bluff what was called Lee's Mill later called Hardee's Mill.

Matthias Vaught served in the Revolutionary War under Francis Marion. In the Light House Horse and fought in the Battle of Cowpens and got into a hand to hand conflict in the Calvarymen with a member of Tarltons English C Calvary and he lost a leg in this fight. Matthias wore a wooden leg until the day he died. The state granted him a pension for his part in serving in the Revolutionary War.
