Son of Matthias Vaught and Mary Mercy Todd.
Husband of Mary Sweet, daughter of Anthony Sweet.

Col. Peter Vaught and his wife settled on a 4,100 acre plantation near his father's plantation. There was a ½ acre cemetery on the plantation property but all of the grave markers disappeared and the reserved graveyard obliterated.

1864 – A large "salt works" operation was located either on or immediately adjacent to the plantation and alongside Singleton Swash.
1890s – A post office was established on the property, and the area became known as "Vaught".
