C. B. Newton, age 97, of Marble, passed away, Friday, May 19, 2017 at his residence. He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. C.B. served in the United States Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded and later received the Purple Heart. He worked in the tunnels for TVA on Appalachian Dam. C.B. also had worked for the ASCS office for years and later worked for Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation for 40 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he had served as superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and treasurer and also was known to be a great bass singer. C.B. enjoyed farming and his family most of all.

He was the son of the late Samuel David and Leila Mae Barton Newton and the husband of the late Birdell Brooks Newton, who died November 26, 2004. He was also preceded in death by one son, Ronald Newton; a grandson, Jay Newton; a sister, Mary Nell Day; three brothers, Hubert, Hamilton, and Junior Newton; and three sons-in-laws, Charlie Trutza, Marvin Hopkins, and Buddy King.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 22, 2017 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, NC. The interment was in Peachtree Community Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by Murphy American Legion Post 96, DAV Chapter 73, Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison-Bristol), and American Legion Post 532.
