Betsy Smith died where she spend most of her life, at the Smith Settlement, known as Smithtown, about 10 miles northeast of Danbury.

She was the widow of John Preston Smith, who she married on March 12,1844, and the mother of the "Smith Boys"; DeKalb, who lived in Madison, WIlliam, lived west of their homestead, John, jr, lived just a few miles east of Danbury. The other sons made more money selling moonshine than from farming.

Jesse, was shot and killed in Winston. A few years earlier by a man named Nat Snipe.
Drury was shot and killed near his home, in the northeast part of Stokes County by Tom Chapman, and not long after his death, Jim died suddenly at his home in the same neighborhood.
Betsy's daughter was still living, (Elizabeth Louise Smith Brown); Mrs. Hubbard Brown.
