Earl was born on January 10, 1935 in Oil City, the son of Earl William Backus and Bonnie Bethel (Welch) Backus. Earl married Nancy Moose on August 20, 1955. After graduating from high school, he worked for 16 years as an auto mechanic in a Chevrolet Dealership. Earl then went to work for Unical in the oil fields as an oil field mechanic, but quickly moved up to management as a field supervisor. He loved to fish, hunt, tinker with old cars and visit with people.
Earl is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Joseph (Selena) Backus of Mt. Pleasant, Gene Backus (Mary Antcliff) of Higgins Lake, James Backus of Shepherd, Jonathon Backus (Teresa Shores) of Higgins Lake and Jeffery (Kari) Backus of Roscommon; grandchildren, Duane, Nick, Joey, James, Brandi, Amie, Chris, Beth, Chantel, Zane, Logan and Brice; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Backus-Flint of Blanchard, and his dog, "Chiquita".
