Fred was a Journeyman Bricklayer and Stone Mason. He was proud to be a member of the Bricklayers Union since 1959. For many years, he served as an officer of the Union Local. He worked on new commercial buildings and homes and helped restore historic buildings in Jefferson City, Ste. Genevieve, and the Bollinger Mill in Bollinger Mill State Park in south Missouri. He built the fireplace in the basement of the St. Stanislaus rectory using brick salvaged from the old rectory.
Fred was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville.
Survivors include JoAnn, his wife of 59 years; one daughter: Janet Markway Wolken (husband Kevin) of Osage Bend; four sons: Steve (wife Tina) of Mary’s Home, Tom (wife Jeananne) of Osage Bend, Danny (wife Diane) of Osage Bend, and Bob (wife Janice) of Frankenstein. His brother Harold Markway and sister Lillian Veit also survive. He was preceded in death by brothers: Lawrence, Charles, and Bill. Fred and JoAnn have 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Fred donated his body to the University of Missouri Medical School. His hope was that this will contribute to finding a cure for diabetes. Memorial contributions are suggested to American Diabetes Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.
A Mass will be celebrated at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville on Monday, June 18, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Ignazio C. Medina officiating. There will be a gathering for family and friends at Wardsville Lions Hall after the Mass.
